Last weekend I caught up with Miami based DJ
Le Spam and the Spam All Stars. This group made a stop in North Florida
before they left for an engagement at S.O.B.’s in New York City's
Downtown Manhattan. Their style
is Afro-Cuban mixed with elements of groove. The band’s new album,
which was recorded in North Miami Beach, features the Gyrce composition
Basheer’s Dream (made popular on Kenny Dorham’s Afro Cuban
album from 1954). The Spam All Stars have a wonderful flutist and alto
saxophonist that like to dance with each other on stage.
The concert venue ‘The Atlantic’
was just footsteps away from the
University of Florida's campus in Gainesville. The club was filled with UF students
who got their parents’ money worth: it was 7 dollars for two sets of
live
music from a six piece band! If you are down in the Sunshine State at
any time, I would recommend catching this band live. I will see them
again next month and will pick up a copy of their first album. Everyone
will be updated with their progress.
